About Home Grown Cow
Home Grown Cow connects farmers with customers who care where their meat comes from. Based in Wisconsin, with offices in Colorado and San Francisco, Home Grown Cow is doing its best to support local livestock and poultry farms by helping them find customers for their products.
Our Goal
Our goal is simple and twofold:
1) Make it easy for farmers to market and sell their meat directly to consumers and for them to receive a greater share of its value.
2) Make it easy for consumers who care where their meat, poultry and cheese comes from, and what kind of meat or cheese it is, to find farms that produce what they want.
Beginnings...
Home Grown Cow is still in the process of beginning, but it all started because one of the founders began buying meat in bulk from local farmers. The difference in taste, texture and price was staggering. A frequent dinner host, he soon came to realize that not everyone is fortunate enough to have the opportunity to enjoy meat raised and purchased this way.
A little research revealed that virtually no service exists to help independent farmers market and sell their products directly to consumers; we also learned that independent livestock and poultry farmers are struggling because of changes in the industry over the past 30 years (see Why are farmers struggling?). In fact, according to the USDA, in 2006 farms received only 19% of the retail value of what they produced. All the rest went to "off farm costs" - which essentially means all the different companies involved in the traditional meat supply chain (huge meat processing plants, marketing companies, transportation companies and big retail chains.
What we offer
Home Grown Cow is a new site, but its biggest advantage is that it's totally free for farmers. Home Grown Cow charges a 15% service fee to consumers when something is sold, but consumers are used to paying a lot more than that in traditional retail channels.
